Please, in the future, have your mail client wrap your messages at a sane
width, say 72 characters - not all of us use GUI mail clients.

Well, I have an Adaptec AHA-2906 SCSI card in a G3 blue/white tower at
work, so I can tell you it does work with Linux. However, you won't be
able to boot an OS from a SCSI drive hanging off said card - the 2906 does
NOT have a boot ROM on it, so OpenFirmware CAN NOT talk with the card.
You'd need a card with a boot ROM (A Mac version of one of the 2940
family or one of the newer Ultra160-based controllers, however, would work
- they actually have a boot ROM on the card).
As I said, once Linux is booted, the Linux kernel has a native driver for
the board, so Linux itself can use the card. If you could create two small
partitions on your boot drive - one for /boot (where your kernels live)
and an Apple_Bootstrap partition (for Yaboot to load from), then you could
have your root FS on the external SCSI drive, and just have Yaboot load
the kernel from the /boot partition, which would then happily mount your
root FS off the external SCSI drive.
