Re: XFree86 on Wallstreet

Hi. I'm another PowerBook G3 Wallstreet user having problem running
X11.  I'm using xserver-xfree86 (and other X packages) version
4.0.3-3.

Symptoms are:

* ATI driver

If I use the ati driver,
(WW) ATI: PCI/AGP Mach64 in slot 0:17:0 could not be detected!
(EE) No devices detected.

and then
flan kernel: Kernel panic: machine check

and the machine reboots itself. Yes, I have the BusID set properly.

You might need a kernel patch, Michael Schmitz would be able to say more.

* FBDev

If I use the fbdev driver, forcing the mode setting from 'fbset -x', starting x gives:

(II) FBDev(0): using default device
(WW) ****INVALID MEM ALLOCATION**** b: 0x82000000 e: 0x82ffffff correcting
(**) FBDev(0): Depth 8, (--) framebuffer bpp 8
(==) FBDev(0): Default visual is PseudoColor
(==) FBDev(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(II) FBDev(0): Hardware: ATY Mach64 (vidmem: 4092k)
(==) FBDev(0): Option ShadowFB is on
(II) FBDev(0): Checking Modes against framebuffer device...
(II) FBDev(0):  mode "1024x768" ok
(II) FBDev(0): Checking Modes against monitor...
(--) FBDev(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024)
(**) FBDev(0): Mode "1024x768": 64.9 MHz (scaled from 0.0 MHz), 48.3 kHz, 59.9 Hz
(++) FBDev(0): DPI set to (100, 100)
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libfb.a
(II) Module fb: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
        compiled for 4.0.3, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libshadowfb.a

Then a hang...

Do you also specify the correct bus ID in this case?

* Solutions Attempted

I followed the direction of Vinod Kurup on http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc-0105/msg00386.html .

However, after 'make world', it doesn't build anything in xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/ati, so I can't run make
install in there.

You have to make sure that the ati driver is selected for the build, the easiest way is to

cp xc/config/cf/{xf86site,host}.def
editor xc/config/cf/host.def

then make World .

Should I try the 4.0.99 RPMs from ftp.linuxppc.org/users/kfukui/ ?

Not a bad idea. Dependencies shouldn't be a problem with the server, and the driver in those RPMs should work with your chip.

Build X source from scratch based on xfree86 CVS ?

That would be about the same as the RPMs.
