Using PCI Hardware Modem under Debian PPC...?

OK another question so soon!

I have a PCI hardware modem (i.e. not a winmodem) which I have put inside my
mac (I'm intending to use it as a server gateway). About all the info I can
gather about the modem itself is what I suspect is the chipset/manufacturer:
ESS ESS56H_DI

The output from /proc/pci reveals the following:

Bus 0, device 13, function 0:
Communication controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 1).
      Vendor id=125d. Device id=2838.
      Fast devsel. IRQ 23.
      I/O at 0x0 [0x1].

I'm guessing that I can use setserial to define this as a serial device
(from what people have told me)? Has anyone else got any experience with a
similar setup?

And just to reiterate, it's *not* a winmodem! I know that for a fact!

Cheers,
Ben
