The only change to any server code between 4.1.0-3 and -4 was this:

     + Support Trident ISA Cyber9320 chip (Alan Hourihane).

I see no plausible way this change could have affected an iBook since
(AFAIK) none of those have Trident chips, so they wouldn't ever have
cause to load the trident module.

Try posting your /var/log/XFree86.0.log so we can see what module is
loaded when the server chokes.
