Yep, the vga driver doesn't work for us.

Shouldn't be needed; just in case, the server log is always in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log

So you probably have to use the fbdev driver.

Scratch that.
dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xfree86
If that doesn't create /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, run dexconf .
