When I first installed gnome, it installed xdm as my dialog manager instead
of gdm.  Look in /etc/init.d/ to see which one you are using. If it is xdm, switch
to gdm, because it will always bring up the gnome panel (plus file manager) every
time you pull up x through it.   Also, the gnome panel (or gnome itself) will not
start if you simply use the command startx.
