Hi,

Controlfb's vram detection problem crops up every once in a while.
Sometimes, a problem may be that a full 4MB is not detected. Other times,
vram is not detected at all. Controlfb in 2.2.x kernel works for some
people, and controlfb in 2.4.x kernel works for other people.

Now, here is yet another attempt at fixing this problem once for all.
I've made a patch based on controlfb in 2.4 and mlan's vram probe code
with some modifications. If you have one of 7300/7500/7600/8500/8600 and
use controlfb under Linux, please try a kernel (2.2.17) with this patch.

Gzipped kernel:
ftp://ppc.linux.or.jp/pub/users/toe/control/vmlinux-controlfb-test.gz

StuffIt-archived kernel:
ftp://ppc.linux.or.jp/pub/users/toe/control/vmlinux-controlfb-test.sit

Patch against YDL's 2.2.17 kernel source:
ftp://ppc.linux.or.jp/pub/users/toe/control/controlfb-vram-test.gz

I've tested this kernel with 7600/120, 7600/132, 8500/150, and it works
ok.

Supposedly, if it works, you should see kernel messages at boot in one of
three following ways,

if 2MB vram is installed only in vram bank 1:

	MacOS display is /chaos/control
control: mem at 0x000000: yes, mirrored at: 2M 4M
control: mem at 0x200000: yes, mirrored at: 0M 4M
control: mem at 0x400000: yes, mirrored at: 0M
control: mem at 0x600000: no, mirrored at:

if 2MB vram is installed only in vram bank 2:

	MacOS display is /chaos/control
control: mem at 0x000000: no, mirrored at: 6M
control: mem at 0x200000: no, mirrored at: 6M
control: mem at 0x400000: no, mirrored at:
control: mem at 0x600000: yes, mirrored at:

if full 4MB vram is installed in vram bank 1 and 2:

	MacOS display is /chaos/control
control: mem at 0x000000: yes, mirrored at:
control: mem at 0x200000: yes, mirrored at:
control: mem at 0x400000: no, mirrored at:
control: mem at 0x600000: no, mirrored at:

I'd very much appreciate any test result or comment, but please direct
them to me (toe@unlserve.unl.edu) not to the list.

Thanks,

Takashi Oe
