What kernel are you using?  You want to make sure that you are using a new one,
try BenH's precompiled kernels (http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh)

The ROM that gets installed with MacOS 9.0.4 makes BootX unreliable.

Erm...what?  It's not a question of not knowing how to use BootX, it's a
question of BootX being unable to function properly.  Check out the yaboot
