It's an unwanted machine, so unless I pay for this stuff out of my own pocket,
buying things isn't an option.

Ahh! that's what I was looking for...now where the heck do I put this tidbit?
Kernel parameter in bootX? xmodmap? I don't need X all that often, but when I
do, having a working mouse makes life soooooo much easier.
