aty128 framebuffer annoyance

Hi,

i have a Rev 1 blue G3 with the ATI128 card, i am running kernel
2.2.15 from pauls tree (pre20, will be final 2.2.15 next time i
reboot)

ever since i started using kernels with aty128 frambuffer support
(2.2.14) i have had this really agrivating problem: whenever i switch
VCs, almost without fail the screen goes black for about 2 full
seconds then slowly fades back in. its as if it goes into powersave
for a second and wakes up again. its driving me INSANE!!

1) has anyone else with this hardware seen this obnoxious behavior?

2) does anyone have any idea how to fix this obnoxious behavior?

here is fbset -v -s -i output:

Linux Frame Buffer Device Configuration Version 2.1 (23/06/1999)

Getting further frame buffer information
Frame buffer device information:
    Name : ATY Rage128
    Address : 0x88000000
    Size : 16777216
    Type : PACKED PIXELS
    Visual : PSEUDOCOLOR
    XPanStep : 8
    YPanStep : 1
    YWrapStep : 0
    LineLength : 1024
    MMIO Address: 0x80900000
    MMIO Size : 8191

I use the VCs extensivly and this problem really makes that hard. and
BTW i do not run X on this machine.

TIA
