building XF4 Server and driver so only?

If I have the rsync of Ani Joshi's xfree tree and I have X402src-1.tgz how
can I go about building and then installing (possibly by hand) only the X
Server and the driver for the graphics card?

X is a network protocol, and as it is still a 6.* release it has not changed
drastically or anything, so I assume I can have all the 2.2r2 clients
installed and libraries and such, and upgrade only the server.

Is this possible? If so how, I assume doing make World and make install is a
bit much as it will want all the fonts and such and will compile everything
from xterm to mesa stuff.

This is to run on a ATI Rage 128 in a pismo.

I dont really want to have to grab that entire 50 MB of stuff in the xfree
tarball in the debian package pool as it is a large download and I already
have 25 or so MB of it downloaded.
