You need to use yaboot to boot the G4. If you have a cd (which I assume you do based on the message
subject), you need to boot to Open Firmware and manually boot the cd since the yaboot script doesn't
recognize your machine correctly (the one on the cd). There are plenty of instructions in the debian
archives and connected with the yaboot and ybin web pages that describe how to do this.
