Because it was packaged a few months after potato went into deep freeze (a
look at the package changelog should reveal this). It's in unstable now
(section admin). Debian does not allow new packages into the release after
freeze (exceptions for security critical stuff only).

Sleep support in the kernel. You failed to mention what Mac you use, so
I'd venture a guess: the 2000 Powerbook aka Pismo?
