Rookie trying to figure out XF86 and other issues...

Hi all!

It' the first time I'm using Linux on my beige G3/266mhz/128MB. I installed
base, XF86, and Gnome packages off the CD I burned. I went through the
configuration process Debian sent me through. Okay, so I have my root
password set up, entered a bunch of numbers into the configuration tool that
asked me for some video/monitor information, and I had it autodetect my
video card and audio.

Okay, everything seemed all good and dandy. I did a bunch of stuff like add
users and passwords into my system. I entered the command startx to start
up X Window and the screen turned all white and had the X looking pointed in
the center of the screen. I've been accustomed to my friends system start
up xterm when I go into X Window. Now, I decide to move the mouse and I
suddenly see black text on the white screen. It's text from when I was in
BASH. I started to curse at my computer and then I realized that the
pointed was leaving trails of 'X's all over my screen when i moved the
mouse. I tried to Command F2 to get into another screen but I was unable
to. I then did a three finger salute (backspace, control, and command) but
X server just wouldn't quit on me. So now, I am here at this user list. :)
Can anyone help me?

Oh, here is more info on my computer.

Video card- Apple/ATI Rage Pro 6MB

Monitor- Multi scan 15" (Small. I know. My 17" monitor died a few months
ago.)

Oh and one more unrelated question. What's the device name for the modem on
a Mac? When I boot Linux up, it tells me it's on tty00. Is this correct
because when I try to log on to my ISP, Linux tells me that there is no
modem at tty00. The modem does work on the Mac side of my computer. Oh and
the modem is an Apple/GV 56k modem.

Thanks in advance for the help.

peace,
