setting up X

What's the best way to set up X? I tried anXious, got the error messages

Protocol: "<<ERTME:OTHER>>"
Mouse type not supported by this OS

So I looked at the archives and tried hacking XF86Config. Now I can
almost start X, but it fails with 

Fatal server error:
No valid modes found.

I really don't know what I'm doing when I'm hacking XF86Config.

Video: 8MB ATI Xclaim 3D (Mach 32? 64?)
Mouse: adb (not working under gpm)
