Re: xterm-debian???
The reason is that Debian's xterm supports many things not in the
standard xterm terminfo entry. The choices were to:
(A) ignore all those features. Not really a choice.
(B) Add them to the 'xterm' entry on debian.
This causes nastier problems - what if you open an xterm on a
remote machine and connect to a debian machine? It then tries
to use escape codes which are not recognized by, say, a Solaris
xterm. This messes up the display.
(C) Keep a standard xterm entry, and add an xterm-debian entry for
our xterm.
The best thing to do if possible is to take the xterm-debian entry
(infocmp xterm-debian > debian-terminfo-entry), copy it to a local
machine, and compile it there (tic debian-terminfo-entry). Doesn't
require root, although it does require terminfo as opposed to termcap.
