Thanks for all the anwers.  Now I'll have to try cutting down on my boot
options:

  # nvsetenv boot-file '/boot/121 root=/dev/hda7 video=ofonly adb_buttons=1' 
  Segmentation fault
  # nvsetenv boot-file '/121 root=/dev/hda7 video=ofonly adb_buttons=1' 
  Segmentation fault

or retry giving options using quik.  I've tried several times before, but 
they seem to be ignored.

No, wait, I still have two positions for the kernel!

  # nvsetenv boot-file '/79 root=/dev/hda7 video=ofonly adb_buttons=1'
