Hi!

Since dpkg 1.17.2, there's a new --verify option that can be used to
verify the integrity of packages, for now only the md5sums are being
checked, but more checks will be added in the future. Also since dpkg
1.16.3 md5sum files are generated at unpack time for packages that do
not ship any.

So at this point the debsums package is mostly unnecessary with stock
dpkg, and the section in the dev-ref could be updated to that effect.
