Could you clarify the last point a bit? Where do you see a problem?

What I would really like to avoid is upstart and systemd specific
details creeping into the sysv init scripts.
sysvinit scripts are already horrible as is, adding more if ; then ;
else statements and various init system specific code will only make
that worse.
