While I have no problem with printf, I also think mixing printf and echo
is ugly, and I'm not at all convinced by the arguments to discourage
echo -n or echo in general.  I also think making different
recommendations based on type of script (init scripts vs maintainer
scripts vs whatever else) is a very, very bad idea.
