This is a misunderstanding on my part menu-xdg creates xdg entries for
the debian menu to be displayed by freedesktop.org desktops, but it
doesn't add root menu entries.

<sigh>  This situation sucks.  I think the debian menu should be the
root menu since it is the canonical location to find things.  This
debian menu as second fiddle so one is lead to expect to find
everything through a root menu that is not in fact policy is
frustrating.  For myself it is easy enough to modify the xfce menu to
use the debian menu as the root menu, but for other users, especially
newbies that's not an option and they will assume something not in the
root menu isn't on the system, because they won't know to look in the
debian menu when the non-canonical root menu doesn't have the
application they're looking for.

Okay, I'm going to stop going on about this, but it irks me.  A lot.
