Re: Bug#178809: rules for Build-Depends-Indep satisfaction make no sense

Hello people,

Today I was hit by the confusing fact that policy states that for the
"build" target to be invoked, both Build-Depends and Build-Depends-Indep
need to be satisfied, but at the same time the autobuilders don't seem
to install Build-Depends-Indep when invoking "build".

Section 7.6 of current policy leaves no doubt that in order to invoke
"build", b-d-i will be installed. The buildds don't.

This was already addressed in bug #178809, where one group of people
says that the buildds are wrong, and someone else says that policy is
wrong.

This bug was closed though, with the following line:
> * [AMENDMENT 6/6/2003] build-depends-indep need not be satisfied
> during clean target. closes: Bug#191411, Bug#178809

That surprises me, appearently policy was fixed but I still think policy
and current buildd-behaviour are contradictory. Can someone enlighten me
about this problem?

Thanks,
Thijs
