Hmm, fair criticism. It was mostly just that I found the dpkg
maintainer's quote to be very odd, and was trying to show by example
just how odd I thought it was.

Yup, I fully agree.

Yes, I very much like Thomas' idea. I just don't think it's a matter
for policy, since it's just a suggestion for a single package.

Having looked into this a little more, I now think that simple
misunderstanding may be why this turned into a major debate. The
original wishlist said something like, "please have dpkg follow
policy." Of course, what Thomas meant was, "please copy the style
mentioned in policy for something unrelated," not "please stop
violating policy." And, while hes tried to clarify this distinction
later, it's possible that an overworked dpkg maintainer simply didn't
take the time to read Thomas' followups with the care that they
perhaps deserved.

But I'm still not sure. If the dpkg maintainer had answered with a
simple "yes" or "no" or even "I'll think about it," that would have
made sense, but the request to make this a policy matter really
didn't, and that's why I'd like to get more feedback from the dpkg
maintainer (assuming he's not sick of the whole matter already).
