Package: lintian
Version: 0.9.3
Severity: wishlist

Policy says:

Your package must call install-info to update the Info dir file, in
   its post-installation script:
install-info --quiet --section Development Development \
            /usr/info/foobar.info

Since it does not say a word about the --infodir option, it follows that
this option is, at least, not needed. Moreover, in some cases (as
discussed in debian-policy), it may be even harmful.

So, it would be nice to have a lintian check for the use of the --infodir
option in maintainer scripts.

Note: If it is possible, making the check to run on the "stable"
distribution would be much appreciated also, since the knowledge
about packages affected for this in slink may be of particular
importance for the Info transition to FHS.

Thanks.

Hi,

Since the major rationale for this change was to ensure if we
could make the transition to the FHS mandated location, which we have
done, this becomes less of an issue. Policy, via the FHS, already
mandates where the package info files go to. How exactly the
maintainer manages this is up to them. Policy should not be used to
force the lintian maintainer to do something they would not do on
their own, so I am closing this report.
