Package: debian-policy
Version: 3.1.1.1
Severity: wishlist

To avoid confusing mixes of distributions (like installing a Debian .deb in
Corel or a Corel .deb on Debian), I think we should add a 'Distro: debian'
control field to all packages and make Corel use 'Distro: corel'.

This not only would avoid a mess with broken dependencies (I've heard somewhere
Corel had some...), but also make possible to check at first look (supposing
someone was crazy enough to mix both) which distro did one .deb come from.

It would even be possible to add the "intended distribution" to the field
(like: 'Distro: debian (potato, woody)' or after a release
 'Distro: debian (2.2))

Hi,

These bugs are mostly about documenting optional parts of the
control file, and this should really be done in dpkg
documentation. Also, this is not quite yet customary practice, and
does not yet seem to be required. If people are interested in making
this into policy, and can come up with reasons that pass the test of
"why does it have to be mandated" as opposed to being added to an
overrides file centerally (I may want to create a package that I
upload to debian, but also keep in a local repo -- over rides files
handle that scenario), well, they can always file a new proposal.
