Moreover, init scripts are designed to be run...by init! It is
possible to run some (but not all) of them directly, but that's not
really their intended purpose. If you're trying to use them for some
other purpose, you are, basically, misusing them, and shouldn't be
surprised when they don't cooperate.
"Should return a meaningful value" is a valid argument for anything in
$PATH. However, init scripts are not in $PATH. (Perhaps some of you
hadn't noticed.:)
If someone has a need to monitor a particular process (for whatever
reason, I freely admit that this is a perfectly reasonable thing to
want in some cases), the appropriate thing to do might be to ask for
an interface to monitor that process, rather than trying to warp the
init scripts for purposes for which they were never intended. In
other words, file a wishlist bug against a specific package, rather
than trying to wield the club of policy to browbeat everyone.
