IIRC, there was even an attempt to make bash use update-alternatives,
which resulted in much chaos and breakage (probably similar to the
more recent perl case). Basically, what it comes down to is: while I
think most of us wish /bin/sh were managed by update-alternatives, as
the poet says, "you can't get there from here."
