zsh-folk may find the following trick useful:

joey@silk:~>doc=/usr/share/doc
joey@silk:~>less ~doc/debian-policy/policy.txt.gz
                           Debian Policy Manual
                           --------------------
...
joey@silk:~>cd ~doc/debconf       
joey@silk:~doc/debconf>ls
README.Debian  changelog.gz  copyright
