[devel-ref] author/homepage in description
I'd like to make a "best practices" note in the developers-reference
about how to indicate the upstream author, author's email, and home
page in the package description. I think this is would be a nice
thing.
Ideally debian/control's known fields would be extended, e.g.,
Upstream-Maintainer: John Doe <jdoe@foo.com>
Upstream-Homepage: http://whatever.sourceforge.net/
Is this worthy of filing as a wishlist on dpkg?
For now, I was planning on recommending something like this:
We recommend that you add the upstream author's name, email address,
and the URL for the package's homepage to the package description in
debian/control. It should be added at the end of description, using
the following format:
.
Author: Norman Walsh <ndw@nwalsh.com>
Homepage: http://docbook.sourceforge.net/
Note the spaces prepending the line, which serves to break the lines
correctly. To see an example of how this displays, see
<URL:http://packages.debian.org/unstable/text/docbook-dsssl.html>.
Note that noting the upstream author is irrelevant for Debian-only
packages; some of these packages may have home pages, although few
do.
Comments desired.
