Those people have a hard wired path in their mind from "virtual path name"
to "physical directory on disk".
They are plain wrong, and will need to adapt their partitioning practice and
filesystem functionality to reality and technical elegance. Maybe GNU/Linux
is not, but the GNU/Hurd is ready (at least principially[1]) to allow
intelligent disk space management and still have everything in /bin.
I would XFree86 to be moved to /usr/bin at least some day. In days where
you can get a 120GB hard disk for 350 euro, I really don't see the need.
The trend is to hide the differences between storage devices, not to
make it visible to the user.

[1] You can't boot yet from a shadowed filesystem, and the shadowfs
implementation is not yet ready for prime time. But all the ground has been
cleared and cultivated.
