Well, the clean way is the udebs we use in debian-installer.

No, you're proposing making the debian-installer effort more
difficult, in the name of some kind of wierd abstract "elegance", the
only benefits of which are aesthetic. At least, that's as far as I
can tell.
I guess I'd wanna hear Joey Hess weigh in, because I'm not involved in
the debian-installer effort.
