I'll admit I don't know make very well, but a cursory read-through of
O'Reilly's make book did not give me this impression.

Furthermore, there is no need to complicate matters worse -- if CURDIR
is not portable but PWD is portable, then only nutters would suggest
using CURDIR instead of PWD. (Apologies to the original poster; I figure
the portability issue was unknown to him or her.) There is no need to go
out of our way to make software unportable. (*sigh* Lookit me ma! Me
know English good!)
