Package: debian-policy
Version: 3.1.1.1
Severity: wishlist

I'd like to have all unix logging subsystems provide syslogd, so
users are free to choose one that fits them. (I'm packaging msyslog
(http://www.core-sdi.com/) and see that this would be already the third
non-obsolete logging-daemon in debian).

There should probably also be guidlines on syslog-facility and the
rotating and logging behavior of packages providing syslogd, in order
for other packages to know what they can assume.

We have a /dev/klog, which wil be read by syslogd directly. Despite what I
said, the Hurd will not have a seperate kernel logger. We use syslogd in
GNU inetutils.

So, you can talk about linux-kernel-log-daemon, if you mean a specific linux
kernel logger which can make use of the System map files.

I am not up to date to the linux side of the discussion, but the Hurd side
is very easy: we only have a system logger daemon, which also does kernel
logging. :)

Thanks,
Marcus
