I Agree, it is bad enough that we have to deal with the uncertanty
autoconf introduces, we certainly should not be condoning this!

Packages that have optional things should have those things forced on
either by using configure options or by editing the configure script to
give such options.

For example, a wack of the recent SSH uploads on various archs didn't have
PAM because configure silently disabled it!
