Re: Bug#43529: debian-policy: mail locking in Debian is _not_ NFS safe

I would oppose such a proposal. Debian does not exist in a vacuum; it
is frequently used in a heterogenous environment with other Unix/Linux
systems. The mail server may not even have *access* to a user's home
dir! I think we should add better support for Maildir, and should
make it easy to choose either Maildir or mbox as an *option*, but in
my opinion, the bug is NFS, not mbox. (NFS *is* a bug, period.:-)
There are already better solutions around for networked mailboxes
(POP, IMAP). And for local mailboxes, Maildir doesn't, IMO, offer
enough advantages to overcome the disadvantage of being non-standard
and not well supported, esp. by third-party software. Good enough to
be an option? Sure. Good enough to be default? No.
