to rehash that discussion.. but.. ]

Well collecting the data from the package does impose a delay because you
have to unpack each file in it. That may or may not be acceptable.

Of course this does lead into one weakness in Manoj's proposal: since the
info is not in the Packages file, you must still download the whole set of
packages before you can be told if they'll all fit on your system.
