Re: /var/mail back to /var/spool/mail
Hi,
You misunderstood me. I am not asking the FHS to modified to
better fit my machine. I am saying that the reason mail is under
/var/spool on my machine has a technical reason, and that my machine
is not alone in this.
As a distribution maintainer/integrator, I am interested in
putting together a system that meets my users needs. Putting mail in
/var/spool, and proposing /var/spool as a mount point for a partition
that may see uncontrolled growth makes for satisfied customers.
This is not even a question of ``overnight changes''; we at
Debian feel technically competent to orchestrate the change if we are
convinced it is for the good of our users. So far, I have been
underwhelmed by technical reasons.
So far, all I have seen is compatibility arguments (my mother
had this rhetorical question about jumping down wells), and an
opinion that mail dies not seem to be spool items (an opinion I
disagree with).
/var/log is too entrenched for me to attempt to change
it. /var/mail is something I see no reason for, and at least one
reason against.
