As sure as I could get...
I downloaded the glibc sources and installed them. I compiled it and copied
the non-stripped objects for catgets.o and open_catalog.o and then ran a 
debugging session and stepped through the code that does this. Note that
this is not using gettext but rather the XPG3 standard. (Though I don't know
if that makes any difference).
