Re: PROPOSAL: A mechanism for updating Debian Policy documents

Hi,

Informally? ;-) Seriously, though, the policy editor was
appointed by the project leader, but that position had a serious
impact on policy; the editor was responsible for selecting topics on
the debian-policy list as candidate amendments, and elading
discussion on them, and coaxing consensus, and then finally, deciding
that consensus had been achieved, exercising editorial rights on the
amendment, and incorporating things into policy. That is a lot of
 responsibility.

However, the policy maintiners do no such thing; and really
have little power over anything except the CVS repository. I think
that we shan't really be inundated by volunteers, and we can use all
the suckers that show up ;-)

Arguably, this is just like being a maintainer for any other
package (albeit an important one); and I think the developer
community (and current volunteer team members) can handle the task of
deciding who the toher co-maintainers should be (after all, the team
members have to be able to work together).

Failing that, the policy group can voice an opinion, and we
always have the project leader to veto/appoint others.

I think that with the four volunteers that we have already,
all of whom are seasoned veterans, the situation seems to be under
control, and we can let the selection process be as informal as it is
 now.
