Actually, Jason came up with a superior suggestion: let a
character (illegal in the current policy) be chosen to be a character
that sorts lower than anything else. (the current contender is ~)
This char can be placed anywhere in the version --
2.0.8~pre1 sorts higher than 2.0.7;
2.0.8~pre1 sorts lower than 2.0.8;
It can even be used multiple times in the version:
2.0.8~pre1~1 sorts lower than 2.0.8~pre1;
No special "epoch" semantics; `~' just hasspecial sort
semantics in that it sort lower than anything (even lower than
nothing)
