Re: Bug#18624: samba: always questions user
[I'm CC'ing this to debian-policy because I think it's an important
general issue.]
What I think it would be best is to tell the user that Samba was
previously installed and ask if he/she wants to keep the current
configuration (regarding running mode). What do you think? I think
several packages like inn and sendmail do it this way.
Well, apache does it that way; something like:
An apache configuration already exists; use it? [y/n]
Restart apache now? [y/n]
Personally, I don't like this either. I upgrade to the newest hamm
every couple of days or so, and it just seems silly that it doesn't
retain my current configuration by default without asking questions.
To me, the best idea is to follow the example set by smail--the first
time the package is installed, ask all the questions. Afterwards,
assume that it's configured properly and don't ask anything. But in
addition, provide a script /usr/sbin/smailconfig to allow it to be
reconfigured on demand.
I don't like the idea of bothering the user with questions during
installations but I don't see any other way out. postinst scripts
sometimes need information and input from the users...
Right. The first time they're installed they need this information.
But afterwards, they've already gotten the information.
