A daemon that doesn't cd to /, or close all fd's, or set itself up as
a session leader, is simply buggy upstream.  Try to fix the C code
rather than code around it in the /etc/init.d, and recommend to the
upstream author that he buy a copy of Stevens "Advanced Programming in
the Unix Environment".
