I also have a treo since a few weeks and searching for some advice
on IP connection I found your two postings on this list.

I tried your script with the same results. (need for soft reset of treo)

Then I changed to /dev/ttyUSB1.

Now you still need a way to have the treo initializing the USB
connection BEFORE starting the pppd.

I did on my treo communicator
1. Open the hotSync Application
2. Opened _/ S (Connection Setup)
3. Added a new configuration "USB only" there which uses "USB to PC" as
   connection method
4. Create a new network connection (Service) in the Preferences/Settings
"Application" ('Einstellen' in German) under "Network" using this
  "USB only" configuration.

For testing purposes to ease the ppp setup I uses no user and no
password to connect and modified your pppd script in two ways:

/dev/ttyUSB1 instead of /dev/ttyUSB0
noauth instead of auth

5. press "connect" in the network connection settings dialogue
6. After that within the treo's timeout start the pppd script

Success!

I can ping my treo, and I can surf the web using blazer (although blazer
will use handspring's own gateway 64.75.2.10 so they know all
my steps on the web). (correct routing on my PC and gateway box provided)

I kept the connection for about 6 minutes but had no idea what caused
pppd to recognize "connection reset by peer" to hangup.

also note that due to the nature of the usb devices I had to kill and
restart my pppd to be able to re-connect.

Now I can think about using my treo to receive and send e-Mail, and test
e-Mail programs for palm handhelds locally via USB.

Still TODO:
find a mechanism which avoids starting the pppd script by hand.
If possible the treo - and the usb devices coming up - should trigger
the pppd to start. to have pppd stopping after disconnect should be a
question of pppd setup.

regards
Olaf
