Sorry if I'm going off your topic here, but might I suggest POE::Component::IRC?
It is a whole lot more stable and, from what I've seen of Net::IRC
it's also alot less buggy overall.
IMHO the documentation is also superior to that of Net::IRC

POE in itself is also sweet and well worth learning if you're yet to do so.
