The central issue is that the current perl-5.6's postinst modifies
alternatives which it does not completely control.
I'm currently working on new 5.004 and 5.005 packages without
alternatives, and a new 5.6 which will conflict with the earlier
versions.
While it is probable that some minor mucking about in the maintainer
scripts will be still be required to ensure the validity of
/usr/bin/perl, I believe that this will solve the problem.
