That's fine in principle, but it doesn't work. ;-)

Installing libreoffice-gnome has no effect.

Is there a way to determine if this is the cause here?

If the glib bug can't be fixed in Jessie, then IMO reverting the
URL-handling commit is an acceptable workaround. Libreoffice is painful
to the point of unusability in a corporate environment if you can't
double-click in the file browser (gvfs pathnames can be horrendous).
