I don't have such effect, but I can think you accidentialy also did
scrollwheel action on the mouse. Which then IMHO isn't a bug.

In any case, 3.5.4 is dead. (yes, I know wheezy released with it. I hate
that :/)
Try with a version in which not relelase-critical bugs actualy get fixed.

For you this means 4.0.3-2~bpo70+1 from wheezy-backports.
