Bug#644957: libreoffice-base: Base runs extremely slowly

I have reported this issue against openjdk-6-jre,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=641537 . However the
problem is even worse in LibreOffice 3.4.3-3 using openjdk-7-jre. It
has been reported upstream as
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35023 and marked not their
problem on the basis that base works OK with earlier versions of Java.
However, until it can be identified what the change is in Java that has
affected base it cannot be clear whether it is LibreOffice or a Java
problem.
