And what do you do with that xcf? There's no preview in File -> Open. There's
a preview option in the toolbar but it doesn't do anything.

Same even in Insert -> Image. First it doesn't show xcf, and there's no preview
there either.

What did you do when you "traced the problem to an xcf (Gimp format) image". What
makes you in your test think the xcf is at fault?

(Tried with a plain KDE and a chroot of sid i386 with openoffice.org + openoffice.org-kde
installed)
