Okay, by removing the ‘openjdk-6-jre’ package, and installing
‘gcj-jre’, the behaviour has changed: the described steps no longer
produce a crash, and arbitrary fiddling with the OpenOffice.org Base
menus produces no other strange behaviour so far.

Specifically, I have made the following changes:

[INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] default-jre-headless
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] ca-certificates-java
[REMOVE, DEPENDENCIES] icedtea-6-jre-cacao
[INSTALL] default-jre
[INSTALL] gcj-jre
[REMOVE] openjdk-6-jre
[REMOVE] openjdk-6-jre-headless
[REMOVE] openjdk-6-jre-lib

I'm reassigning this report to the ‘openjdk-6-jre’ package. Perhaps it
belongs against one of the other Java packages I removed, but I don't
know.
